Random Name Generator
Generate lists of full names or invented startup-style names.
Identities are randomized using a curated US-cultural pool. Proprietary draft lists are never archived or transmitted.
Pick an archetype, choose how many names you want, and this tool fills a list you can scan and copy. It is built for the moments when you need a placeholder character, a test record, or a spark of inspiration for a project name — not carefully, just quickly and in bulk. Names are assembled at random in your browser from built-in word lists; nothing you generate is stored or sent anywhere.
Four archetypes
The Identity Archetype menu changes how each name is built. Standard pairs a first name from a combined pool with a surname to make a full name. Traditional Male and Traditional Female draw the first name from the matching list before adding a surname. Startup & Tech works differently: it coins a single brandable word by gluing a short prefix (like Nex, Zyn or Lux) onto a suffix (like -ify, -io or -flow), the kind of made-up name a new app might use. The Candidate Count slider generates anywhere from 1 to 50 at a time.
Copying, and why names sometimes repeat
Click any single name to copy it on its own, or use Copy All to put the whole list on the clipboard, one name per line. Because each name is drawn independently at random, the same name can appear twice in one batch — this is more likely in Startup & Tech mode, where the prefix and suffix lists combine to about 225 possible words, than with full names, which have a far larger pool. If you need a set of unique names, generate a few extra and remove any repeats.
They are random, not real
Full names are just common first names randomly matched with common surnames, so any recognisable combination is coincidence rather than a reference to a real person. That makes them well suited to sample data, story drafts, sign-up mock-ups and design comps. For an invented startup word, always search whether the name — and a matching domain or trademark — is already taken before you build anything around it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Startup & Tech archetype produce?
It builds a single made-up word by joining a short prefix to a suffix (for example Nex + ify). The prefix and suffix lists combine to roughly 225 possible names, so check availability before using one.
How many names can I generate at once?
Between 1 and 50, set with the Candidate Count slider. Moving the slider or pressing Generate Identities produces a fresh list.
Can the same name show up twice in one list?
Yes. Names are chosen at random with replacement, so duplicates are possible — especially in Startup & Tech mode, which draws from a smaller set of combinations than full names do.
Do these names belong to real people?
No. Full names are random pairings of common first and last names, so any match to an actual person is coincidental. They are intended for placeholders, test data and brainstorming.
