Area Project Details

Flooring, tiling, paint, and turf are all bought by area, so knowing your total square footage is the first step in any quote. This calculator adds up as many rooms or areas as you like, accepts measurements in feet, inches, yards, or metres, and can tack on a waste allowance and a price to estimate your material cost. It also shows the total in square yards and square metres, and it all runs in your browser.

Measuring several areas at once

Each row is one rectangular area, and the calculator finds its size by multiplying length by width, converting to square feet based on the unit you pick:

Area (sq ft) = Length × Width, converted to feet

Behind the scenes it divides square inches by 144, multiplies square yards by 9, multiplies square metres by 10.7639, and divides square centimetres by 929.03. Add a row for every room and the tool sums them into one total. That total is then also shown in square yards (divided by 9) and square metres (divided by 10.7639), so you can match whichever unit your supplier quotes in.

The waste factor and cost estimate

Real installations never use exactly the measured area — offcuts, pattern matching, and breakage all add up. Ticking the waste option multiplies your total by 1.1, adding a standard ten percent that covers most flooring and tiling jobs; intricate patterns or diagonal layouts may need more. Enter a price per square foot and the calculator multiplies it by the total (including any waste) to estimate the material cost. Because the waste allowance is applied before pricing, the cost reflects what you'll actually need to buy rather than the bare floor area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calculate more than one room?

Yes. Add a row for each room or area, each with its own dimensions and unit, and the calculator sums them into a single total in square feet, square yards, and square metres.

How much does the waste option add?

Ten percent. It multiplies your measured total by 1.1, a common allowance for offcuts and breakage. For complex patterns or diagonal tile layouts you may want to add more manually.

How is the cost worked out?

It multiplies the total square footage — including the waste allowance if you enabled it — by the price per square foot you enter, giving an estimate of the material cost only.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.
